Senator Hilda Solis is the Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama.
Born to immigrant parents in Los Angeles, Solis grew up near a landfill, but also visited the San Gabriel Mountains often. Those two early events in her life have driven her to pursue environmental justice in her political career. Solis was elected to the California Assembly in 1992 where she dealt with environmental issues such as groundwater contamination and landfill leakage. She gained a seat in the California State Senate in 1994 where she was the first Hispanic woman to serve. While there she focused on labor, education and healthcare issues.
In 1997 she pushed for legislation that would protect low-income families from having landfills placed near their residences. For her work in this area, she was given the Profile in Courage Award by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.
In 2000 she was elected to the House of Representatives where she not only worked on immigration and labor issues, but championed many environmental issues as well. She sat on the Committe of Energy as well as the Commerce, the Committee on Natural Resources.
President Barack Obama's choice of Solis as Secretary of Labor underscores his commitment to not only create jobs for the nation, but jobs that focus on clean and renewable energy.
Notable Eco Activity
Solis is well-known for her advocacy of green collar jobs and for authoring the Green Jobs Act which trains workers for jobs in renewable energy and energy-efficient industires in an attempt to fight global warming.
