Lubchencho, an environmental scientist and marine ecologist was born on December 4, 1947 and grew up in Colorado. She received her PhD. and taught at Harvard University. She was named Distinguished Professor of Marine Biology at the Wayne and Gladys Valley of Marine Biology and Oregon State University. Her research interests include biodiversity, climate change,sustainability science and the state of the oceans.

Jane Lubchenco leads an interdisciplinary team who study the marine ecosystem to learn how it works, how it is changing and humans can change their actions to benefit ocean systems. She often testifies before Congress, the United Nations and provides advice to the White House and other agencies and associations, religious and other leaders. She co-chaired Oregon's Advisory Group on Global Warming that recommended actions the state should take to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
Lubchenco has received numerous awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship, Pew Fellowship, eight honorary degrees, including one from Princeton University, and a Heinz Award (2002) in the Environment. In 2003, she was awarded the Neirenberg Prize for Science in the Public interest from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Between 1997-98, she was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
President Barack Obama selected Lubchenco to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, making her the first woman to ever hold that position.
