Johnny Depp is an American Academy Award-nominated actor/producer/director/screenwriter famous for his leading roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, and several other major release motion pictures, including Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Blow, Chocolat and nearly 50 others. His on-screen performances have earned him three Oscar nods since 2004, including a nomination for Finding Neverland, the story of how J.M. Barrie was inspired to create Peter Pan. In 2007, Depp garnered a Best Actor Academy Award nomination and won the Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Golden Globe Award for his cutthroat barber role in Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton's big screen adaptation of the musical.
Depp was born John Christopher Depp II in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1963, the son of a waitress and an engineer and the youngest of four children. He claims to have moved more than 20 times during his turbulent childhood, finally settling in Florida in 1970. During their brief marriage, Depp's now ex-wife, makeup artist Lori Anne Allison, introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who encouraged Depp to consider acting. Before Depp's first on-screen role in 1984, he worked as a gas station attendant and a telemarketer selling ballpoint pens.
Depp currently lives with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis. The couple have two children, daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp (born May 27, 1999) and son John "Jack" Christopher Depp III (born April 9, 2002).
Notable Eco Activity
Depp recently went public with his commitment to preserving the environment—on a very personal level—despite maintaining a famously low-profile in the mainstream media. His 2005 purchase of a private, 35-acre Caribbean eco-paradise island was first reported on The Huffington Post in July 2008. The actor affectionately named his $3 million oasis away from the chaos of Hollywood "F*ck Off Island," where his tropical digs will soon be powered by grid-independent, geothermal solar hydrogen. Inventor Michael Strizki, famous for designing America's first solar-hydrogen house in Hopewell, N.J., was reportedly hired to green Depp's sprawling Bahamas estate.
Depp credits his friend, the late Marlon Brando, for inspiring his eco-lifestyle. Brando embraced the latest earth-friendly technology to convert his own Tahitian island into an unprecedented eco-hideout. Depp is third in line to receive Strizki's limitless, clean energy system, which operates exclusively on hydrogen fuel cells. Depending on how much energy Depp's family consumes, the conversion could cost between $250,000 to $500,000.
