Lisa Jackson, a New Orleans native, attended St. Mary's Dominican High School, graduating in 1979. She obtained a chemical engineering master's degree from Princeton University and graduated summa cum laude from Tulane University's School of Chemical Engineering.
Currently a member of New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine's cabinet, Jackson has served as his Chief of Staff since February of 2006. She was formerly the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), and is President Barack Obama's pick to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). She will be the first African-American, fourth woman and second New Jerseyan to hold the position.
Jackson lives in East Windsor with her husband and two sons.
Notable Eco Activity
From 1976 to 2002, Jackson worked at the EPA's superfund site remediation program in Washington, D.C. She then served as deputy and acting director of the region's enforcement division in New York.
Jackson joined the NJDEP in 2002, as Commissioner of Compliance and Enforcement, where she supervised almost 3,000 professionals responsible for protecting and sustaining New Jersey's water, air and land and preserving its natural resources. She also oversaw state parks, beaches, fish and wildlife programs.
As Assistant Commissioner for Land Use Management in 2005, she headed programs including land use regulation, water supply, geological survey and water monitoring and standards. She focused on developing incentives for stimulating growth in the right places. Under her leadership, the NJDEP enacted standards implementing the landmark Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act. She led compliance sweeps in Camden and Paterson in which pollution on public health had been neglected, working with county officials and the EPA, mobilizing over 70 inspectors to conduct over 1,000 compliance sweeps.
