Matthew Modine is an American Golden Globe-nominated actor famous for his roles in the films "Full Metal Jacket", "Birdy," and "Vision Quest." He was nominated for an Emmy for his role in "And the Band Played On" and currently stars in TV's "Weeds."
Modine is the youngest of seven children and grew up in Utah. He married Caridad Rivera, October 31, 1980 and has two children, Bowman and Ruby.
In addition to starting Bicycle for a Day (BFAD), an environmental initiative created with Charles Finch, Matthew Modine also began the Card Carrying Liberal Foundation, which has the objective of protecting the ideals of liberalism and supporting the liberties and human rights that liberal societies helped to establish.

Matthew's project is Bicycle for a Day (BFAD), an awareness-gathering event created to help people find tools to use in their everyday lives that improve and repair the environment and personal health. Says Matthew,"There are hundreds of things each of us can do everyday that will have an immediate, positive impact on the environment. Bicycling is one." More than 14,000 people attended the first event held in September 2008 at South Street Seaport in New York. Proceeds from BFAD events and sales of related items go to support Global ReLeaf and Waterkeeper Alliance.
