Michelle Obama was born on January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois to Marian Shields Robinson and Fraser Robinson III. Michelle can trace her roots to pre-Civil War African Americans. Growing up on Euclid Avenue in the South Shore community area of Chicago Michelle attended Bryn Mawr Elementary School and Whitney Young High School. She graduated from high school in 1981 and went on to major in sociology and minor in African-American studies at Princeton University, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1985. Michelle earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Harvard Law School in 1988.
Following law school, she became an associate at the Chicago office law firm of Sidley Austin, where she first met Barack Obama. Michelle and Barack married in October 1992, they have two daughters, Malia Ann (born 1998) and Natasha (known as Sasha) (born 2001). Michelle held positions in the Chicago city government as an Assistant to the Mayor, and as Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. In 1993 she became Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, a non-profit youth organization, where she worked for almost four years. In 1996, Michelle Obama served as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago. In 2002, she began working for the University of Chicago Hospital system, serving first as Executive Director for community affairs, then as Vice President for Community and External Affairs.
Regarded as a charismatic public speaker, Michelle delivered the keynote address on the first night of the 2008 Democratic National Convention. In that speech she stated, "that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, and you do what you say you're going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them." She campaigned vigorously and with great dignity on her husband’s behalf, in his 2008 run for the White House. Michelle Obama is the first African-American First Lady of the United States.
Famous Quotes
“The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.”
