Natalie Portman

Born Natalie Hershlag, on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem, Israel, she moved with her family to Washington D.C. when she was 3 years old. She decided to take her grandmother's maiden name of Portman so as not to embarass her physician father and family in the event that she did not perform well in her first movie, "The Professional". She decided to keep the name to maintain her privacy and protect her family. Portman remained on the East coast, last residing in Long Island, New York, until she moved to Boston in order to attend Harvard University, where she obtained a degree in Psychology. While at Harvard, she was Alan Dershovitz's research assistant. In 2004, she attended graduate school at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. She is fluent in Hebrew and has studied French, Japanese, German and Arabic.
