Penélope Cruz Sánchez was born on April 28, 1974 in Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain, the daughter of Encarna Sánchez and Eduardo Cruz. She studied classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory and continued her training under a series of prominent dancers.
After winning a talent search at the age of 15 Penélope began her acting career. Her first major films were Jamón, Jamón and Belle Époque. In 1997, she starred in Abre Los Ojos, directed by Alejandro Amenábar and 1999 she appeared in Pedro Almodóvar's Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother), which won an Academy Award for Foreign Language Film. Starring in several American films such as Blow, Vanilla Sky, and Bandidas, All the Pretty Horses and Volver gained her additional worldwide acclaim.

Penélope Cruz is a supporter of Global Green an organization that showcases cost-effective smart solutions to global warming. They feature and support highly visible regional projects that promote the viability of solar and renewable energy production, transform energy use in our buildings and advocate for fuel-efficient vehicles.
Penélope Cruz will co-host for the Third Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar Party in February.
She filmed a public service announcement to show her support for the Live Earth music event that brought together a global audience on July 7, 2007 to combat the climate crisis.
