Sheryl Suzanne Crow was born in Kennett, Missouri on February 11, 1962, to a family immersed in music, her father Wendell, a trumpet player and her mother Bernice a pianist. She is the third child of four siblings, she has two older sisters, Kathy and Karen and younger brother Steven. Sheryl began piano lessons at 5 and composed her first song at 13. She majored  in music at the University of Missouri in Columbia. After graduating, Sheryl taught music to autistic children for two years at a St. Louis elementary school, and has been ever since an advocate of Save the Music, a program that supports the teaching of music in schools.

Sheryl's debut album Tuesday Night Music Club was released in the fall of 1993. In early 1994, it began climbing the charts, fueled by the success of the single "Leaving Las Vegas.” In the fall of 1996, Sheryl's self-titled second album, almost exclusively the work of Sheryl alone, with the hit song  “If It Makes You Happy” was met with critical success.

In 1998 Sheryl's third album, The Globe Sessions, which marked a turning point in her, career was released. Spawning the single My Favorite Mistake, the album won the approval of fans and critics alike and was nominated for Best Album and Best Rock Album in 1999 for the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. Sheryl was also nominated for Best Producer of the Year, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for There Goes the Neighborhood, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "My Favorite Mistake." When all was said and done, she took home the Grammy for Best Rock Album of the year. The balance of her Discography includes: Live From Central Park (1999), C'mon, C'mon (2002), Live At Budokan (2003), The Very Best Of (2003), Wildflower (2005), Hits And Rarities (2007) and Detours (2008). Appearing as a guest performer, Crow did background vocals on "Put on Your Green Shoes," a multi-artist album aimed at stimulating awareness of environmental issues and celebrating the beauty of our planet.

In May of 2007 Sheryl announced her adoption of a 2 month old baby boy Wyatt.

Notable Eco Activity

Crow, an eco-activist performer, believes that environmental activism begins at home. The next time you brush your teeth, make sure the water's not running until you actually need it. Insulate your water heater. Unplug electronic devices when you're not using them. Bring cloth bags to the supermarket. And consider buying a hybrid car.

On a "Stop Global Warming College Tour" to raise student consciousness about global warming Crow was quoted as saying "I think this is about raising consciousness, just doing the smallest act can make a difference." "For me, this is a very personal issue," Crow says. "I find God in nature, and it frightens me when I find things changing so drastically within my lifetime. I get really nervous about what's happening every day when I read the newspapers.

Famous Quotes

On Motherhood and the Environment: “Two days before Wyatt came, I finished a Stop Global Warming college tour. When a baby comes into your life, the environment becomes so personal. Having him around, this little innocent spirit, really made me fearless about writing what I wanted to write and about not being afraid of who I was going to piss off. It created a lot of urgency about that.”
